# Release

> End a temporary agent hire before its expiry.

# crewship release

End a temporary hire without deleting its runs, chats or memory notes. The agent
becomes expired; [`crewship rehire`](/cli/hire#crewship-rehire) can bring it back.

```bash theme={null}
crewship release <agent-slug-or-id> [--yes]
```

Requires authentication, an active workspace and the Manager role or higher.
The CLI resolves the agent reference and calls `POST /api/v1/agents/{id}/release`.
It prints the agent ID and expiry; structured formats contain `id`, `expired_at`
and `released`. An already expired hire succeeds with `released: false`.

| Flag | Default | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `-y, --yes` | `false` | Skip the confirmation prompt. |

Stop a running hire before releasing it. A hire awaiting approval must instead
be denied; a permanent agent cannot be released as a temporary hire. API errors
remain CLI errors. See the [hire commands](/cli/hire.md) for hire, approval and rehire.
