End a temporary hire without deleting its runs, chats or memory notes. The agent becomes expired; crewship rehire can bring it back.
Requires authentication, an active workspace and the Manager role or higher. The CLI resolves the agent reference and calls POST /api/v1/agents/{id}/release. It prints the agent ID and expiry; structured formats contain id, expired_at and released. An already expired hire succeeds with released: false. Stop a running hire before releasing it. A hire awaiting approval must instead be denied; a permanent agent cannot be released as a temporary hire. API errors remain CLI errors. See the hire commands for hire, approval and rehire.
